The London 2012 Olympic Games will take place this year so I decided to create a magic trick based on this theme creating instant interest in something that’s very current & popular worldwide. I have to put together a routine using cards depicting one of the main symbols of the Olympics - ‘The Five Olympic Rings’. Designed in 1912 by Pierre de Coubertin the founder of the modern Olympic Games. The rings represents the five continents and reinforces the idea that the Olympic movement is International and welcomes all countries of the world to join – as does magic!

To me this symbol has always been very magical and magicians have been linking rings for centuries. Indeed this routine is not just limited as a presentation on the Olympic Games Rings but can also be presented as ‘The Chinese Linking Rings’. The routine itself is very visual & magical with a number of magic effects taking place in a fast paced entertaining routine with the perfect magical finale happening in the spectator’s hands!

Also one big plus is that by the end of the routine you are left clean and with an instant re-set. The routine is also open to variations some of which are also included!

EFFECT

Every one is talking about the London 2012 Olympics and the conversation is turned towards one of the iconic symbols of the Olympic games – The Olympic Rings.

Six pieces of card are clearly shown to be blank on both sides and one of them is given to a spectator to hold between their palms. There are of course five Olympic Rings in the symbol. Suddenly a single ring appears printed on one of the cards followed by four others on each of the other previously shown blank cards.

But of course the symbol should depict all the rings linked together symbolizing the harmonious gathering together of the five continents for the games. So the wonder worker then causes first one of the rings to visually disappear in a most magical way followed by the other rings in quick succession. Immediately the cards are each clearly shown to be blank once again on both sides!

For the finale - the "Race to the Finish" - the spectator is asked to lift their hand and to everyone’s amazement the blank card they have been holding the whole time is now seen to be printed with the five rings linked together as in Olympic Rings Symbol!! The crowd cheers as the jubilant magician wins the Gold!!
